Why are shows like "Laguna Beach" and "The Hills" so popular?

I don't understand why people (let's face it, 99% women) watch shows like these? They are not celebrities and have no talent for anything in the entertainment industry. They are famous for nothing, and their lives are driven by just their money and looks. What kind of message is that sending to teenagers in America when these people are idolized? I've seen posts like "how can I be/look more like so-and-so from Laguna Beach/The Hills". I mean, wtf? I'd rather spend more time making my own life interesting than watching someone's life who has had everything handed to them. Which is fine, you can't help being born into wealth, or born with good looks, but but to have people idolize that solely for those reasons? Give me a break, we need more talent on TV and less trash.
